MonaLisa Touch® Q & A

What is MonaLisa Touch?

MonaLisa Touch is a laser therapy designed to reverse vaginal and vulvar atrophy.

Vaginal and vulvar atrophy is an uncomfortable condition where the tissue of the vagina and vulva experiences thinning, drying, and inflammation because of a decline in estrogen. This condition can lead to several uncomfortable symptoms like urinary incontinence, decreased vaginal lubrication, and painful intercourse.

MonaLisa Touch uses gentle laser energy to stimulate the walls of the vagina to produce collagen. Increased collagen helps to restore functional tissue, encourage hydration, and improve your overall vaginal health.

What are the benefits of MonaLisa Touch?

Unlike surgical treatments or hormone therapy, MonaLisa Touch has few reported side effects. Women who have used MonaLisa Touch therapy to restore their vaginal health see improvement almost immediately.

Symptoms and conditions improved by MonaLisa Touch include:

  • Dryness, itching, and burning
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Difficult intercourse
  • Vaginal laxity

Women with vaginal and vulvar atrophy because of hormonal or physical changes can also be successfully treated with MonaLisa Touch.

What can I expect during my MonaLisa Touch procedure?

Your doctor performs your MonaLisa Touch treatments on-site at Bluewater Urology Associates.

During your appointment, Dr. Kenneson or a member of her team inserts a vaginal probe into your vagina. Fractional CO₂ energy directed at your vaginal walls creates a photothermal reaction, causing it to contract. This results in improved health and strength in the vagina.

Treatments are usually painless, but you might experience mild discomfort. The entire procedure is done in less than five minutes, and you can return to work immediately.

If you experience faint discomfort, it fades within a few days following your treatment. While you can resume normal activities within three days, it’s recommended to avoid intense physical exertion, weightlifting, and hot baths.

How long does it take to see results from my MonaLisa Touch treatment?

MonaLisa Touch results occur immediately and continue to improve over time, especially if you have multiple treatments.

The number of MonaLisa Touch treatments vary from person to person, but a minimum of three sessions is recommended. These are performed every six weeks. Once you’ve completed your treatment package, your doctor might recommend one MonaLisa Touch procedure per year for maintenance.
